Incorporating preferential prey selection and stochastic predation into population viability analysis for rare prey species

چکیده
There is increasing evidence that predation can cause the decline and extinction of small populations of prey, and that stochastic predation resulting from variation in prey selection by individual predators can have significant consequences for population persistence. Modelling approaches that ignore variation in prey selection exhibited by individual predators may inaccurately predict the effect of predation on prey populations, especially over longer time scales. We assess the impacts of variation in prey selection by building PVA models for endangered huemul deer Hippocamelus bisulcus that sequentially include and exclude observed stochasticity in predation among individual pumas Puma concolor. Our results indicated that huemul are at risk of extinction in all scenarios modelled, although the immediacy of this risk differed based on model structure and time period considered. Specifically, modelling predation as a random effect based on an interrupted Poisson process rather than as a directional and continuous change in survival rates, resulted in significantly longer estimates of time to extinction independent of the assumed intensity of predation. Our results highlight the importance of determining whether specialist predators are driving predation on rare prey, and when they are, incorporating said stochastic predation when attempting to predict persistence probabilities of rare prey using PVA models. Since results of PVA models are commonly used to develop conservation strategies, we advocate for the inclusion of stochastic predation in future PVA models where warranted to more accurately inform strategies for the conservation of rare prey and their predators. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Some Crucial Consequences of Adaptive Habitat Selection by Predators and Prey: Apparent Mutualisms, Competitive Ghosts, Habitat Abandonment, and Spatial Structure Douglas
Numerous ecological models evaluate how predators influence the abundance of their prey. Prey dynamics in these models often reflect a compromise between prey reproductive potential, density-dependent competition, and the direct consumption of prey by predators. But predators and prey play a complex evolutionary game where prey behavior, and its effect on distribution and abundance, depends on ...
متن کاملA Predatory Commensalism Model in a Deterministic and a Stochastic Environment
In the current paper, we propose a two-prey-one-predator system with Holling type II predation functional response where prey species consumes the remains of the other prey species’ carcass given by their predator. Mathematical analysis of the proposed model equations with regard to non-negative invariance including stability and bifurcation are carried out. Next, we extend the deterministic sy...

متن کاملPredicting predation efficiency of biocontrol agents: linking behavior of individuals and population dynamics
Behavioral ecology and population ecology are two separate branches of ecology; studies linking the effect of individual behavior and population dynamics are rare. This paper connects a stochastic optimal foraging model of insect predators with an age structured population model of its prey. I modeled syrphid larvae feeding on cereal aphids, an interaction critical to cereal crops in Germany. T...
متن کاملTrait-based diet selection: prey behaviour and morphology predict vulnerability to predation in reef fish communities.
Understanding how predators select their prey can provide important insights into community structure and dynamics. However, the suite of prey species available to a predator is often spatially and temporally variable. As a result, species-specific selectivity data are of limited use for predicting novel predator-prey interactions because they are assemblage specific. We present a method for pr...
